Another great
show (#893)! The first time I saw their "Midsummer" performance, I thought of the 'Paul Is Dead' rumor when Paul,
as Pyramus, was saying, "Now am I dead... now die, die, die." "Yesterday" was reminiscent of Kevin Kline's unusually
plaintive version of Nick Bottom / Pyramus in the latest film of the play. Other things in the #893 that were
surprizing appropriate were the LOVE version of George's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (with the line "the play you
are staging") and the riff from "Green Sleeves" at the end of "All You Need Is Love" having the line by Falstaff in
act 5, scene 5 of "Merry Wives of Windsor" ("...let it thunder to the tune of Green Sleeves..."). Very cool indeed!

Three
better-than-average BwtB shows, all in a row (#s 890, 891, and 892) - impressive! Those Dhani and Pete songs were
very cool, like icing on the cake. I don't mind "Say Say Say" because the video of it was so good. Most of Paul's
videos are top notch; not just playing the song, but putting it into context with a 'story' going on around it.

I thought show #890
was one of the best you've put together in a couple of months at least. The clip of Marino Marini singing
in "Luna de Miel" of what Paul covered with the Beatles is one of the neat things about BwtB. The German live set
was cool also, especially the unusual instrumental work on "Yesterday" - no string quartet and not even an acoustic
guitar. It actually sounded like a solid-body electric guitar, like a Fender or something, with Ringo doing some quite
drumming. Nice to hear the song in a different format. Dhani's "Another John Doe" was very good, and it sure sounded like
his dad! I'm pleasantly surprised that it was in the body of the show and not locked into the Odd Track Out. I think it's
only fair; Paul and Ringo can release new material any time, but the 'voice of George' now is Dhani and the 'voice of
John' is now Julian and Sean. Just a personal opinion, but it 'feels' right.

I just was given the
2-Disc Deluxe Edition of ‘Across The Universe.’ I was quite impressed how the sense of the 60's and 70's was
captured, especially since I grew up in its midst. I enjoyed the Director's (Julie Taymor) comments and interviews.
I think our younger generation can learn a lot about the times and the people of the time. The performances and
communicated associations are splendid. The character names are cool, too: Lucy, Jude, Sadie, & Prudence!
The theater is very artistic. Highly recommend!

Don't miss The Fab at Sam's Town every Wednesday nite from 8 til Midnight. I went last week for the first time in
almost a year and yes, the music is incomparable. I am still recuperatingfrom the excitement and just getting up and dancing alone with all other fans on their dance floor.
The most exciting that happened that evening tho was that Brody, lead singer from the Yellow Brick Road, sang
McCartney's Live & Let , etc., and blew us all away. Besides being very cute, his songs were spellbinding.
Also, David St. John, played drums for The Fab that nite. Miss you David as a regular.
In any event, if you have a free Wednesday nite, don't miss The Fab. Call 393-4FAB and hear Dennis Mitchell announce their venues!!!
Hope to see you there, because a splendid time will be had by all...

What is the longest Beatle recording? Longer than Hey Jude, longer than I Want You, longer than Revolution #9, longer than any or all of the Christmas Fan Club records. In fact, it's longer than all of them put together. For that matter, that recording is longer than all other Beatle songs and interviews put back to back. Give up? It's the inner groove at the end of the EMI version of Sgt Pepper, infinitely repeating itself!

Great show with Mr Spizer this week. You're right, his books are excellent. I have all of them except for the Beatles on Vee-Jay (can't bring myself to paying $300 for a book). However he does a very good recap of the Vee-Jay days in his book The Beatles are Coming.
The Vee-Jay story is comical and tragic at the same time. It's amazing how many records they were able to release off those 16 tracks and how they were constantly dodging lawsuits. Imagine what might have been the fate of the Beatles in the US if Vee-Jay had made those 1963 royalty payments and kept the Beatles all to themselves. Such a small label would surely have hurt their popularity. Ah, the What-ifs!
The Beatles Swan Song just released is another fun read, talking about all the off kilter Beatles records from Atco, MGM, etc that came out during Bealtemania.
I hope you can get Mr Spizer for other interviews.

As John said, "Let's hear it for Dennis!" Two questions though: what's the instrument that sounds like water boiling that Rolf Harris is playing in "Tie Me Kangaroo Down" and did the "Little Girl" interview tape inspire the title "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)" since she found the Beatles by merely looking in the phone book?

Dylan is such a trip, "the Persian drunkard, he follows me...", i.e., Omar Khayyam ("A book of verses underneath the bough, / a jug of wine, a loaf of bread, and Thou"); thanks for playing "Absolutely Sweet Marie"! Is the album still in print? Is that Dylan playing the harmonica on "If Not For You"? I know a number of record labels were possessive, to the point of paranoia, those days (cf. Gram Parsons on "Sweetheart", or for that matter, George's "L'Angelo Misterioso"). The ending was perfect with James Ray's original version of "Got My Mind Set On You." I love how the brass section is off-set by the banjo. Nice interview Pete Best at the beginning of the show. Great job, as usual, Dennis.

The two-part Pepper shows, #829 and #830, were great. I've always thought Pepper was the best rock album, bar none; and it's kind of appropriate that it would be the first shows on KUNV, like it's a totally new era. The station was also the 'exile community' from the classical station 15 to 20 years ago (I will have to send you an e-mail about it: Midday Mozart like Breakfast with Beatles, etc). The "Making Of..." dvd sounds cool, with George Martin's and Paul's memories; I will have to get a copy of it. The bit about "When You're 64" in the Caveran, after they have some problems with amps, actually does make sense with the "mending a fuse" line. John's "...Incredible Sheep Shrinking Grateful Airplane" bit was hilarious. The Frampton / Bee Gees 'Odd Track Out' on #830 fun. Keep up the good work!

Dennis, pgm #828 was the best for several months. "Dead Meat" is surprisingly good; this will sound a bit heretical here, but I'd be hard pressed to name more than 4 or 5 non-Beatles John songs any better. It's just that good. Paul's "Dance Tonight" is very good; looks like his new CD is going to be great, with "Ever Present Past" too. Was that the song that Paul was demonstrating the overdubbing to the audience on that PBS special? George saying, "help, help, help.." in the commercial reminded me of "number nine, number nine...".
Loved the German set! ...though each time I hear "Baby's In Black" I still see the cartoon of the song (the vampires, etc.) in my head. I always thought that they played the Star Club only twice, not three times; the 2nd time was when Stu quite the band just before his stroke / hemorrhage. I didn't get the 'Pig' bootleg of the Star Club set because they were doing just doing cover versions of songs from the 50s. Later I of regretted not getting it, but then I saw double LP of it (in the Vegas Sears, no less!), song for song, from "Lingasong" as "Live! at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany" (# LS-2-7001). It still didn't have any original songs, but 8 of the 26 were released in studio versions later: Roll Over Beethoven (track #2), Mr Moonlight (#8), A Taste Of Honey (#9), 'Til There Was You (#11), Kansas City (#12), Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby (#21), Matchbow (#22), and Long Tall Sally (#25). I've never heard that version of "I Saw Her Standing There" before (or any other Lennon / McCartney song at the Star Club), but it's great; both the performance and really, the recording of it sounds pretty good too. Great job!

The rock tentacles that lead to or from the Beatles never ceases to amaze.
George revealed that his occasional association with Delaney & Bonnie in the late 60s led to the discovery of his slide guitar techniques.
Delaney & Bonnie, because of the connections that Delaney formed as a highly regarded session man, hosted the likes of Eric Clapton after Blind Faith, Carl Radle, Bobby Whitcock,Jim Gordon - all of which later formed Derick & the Dominoes. Also,at various times they were associated with Jim Keltner, Dave Mason, Duane Allman and King Curtis - quite an impressive list.
Its no surprise that many of the artists above contributed on the highly acclaimed Harrison projects - All Things Must Pass and Concert For Bangladesh.
Thanks Dennis, your show never fails to educate the ever curious rock fan.

Hi, just wanted to mention another cover version of "It's For You". It was by a group called Springwell. It was released in 1971 on Parrot Records and was a minor hit.
Our local radio station played it and it charted on their tunedex. It was similar to
3 Dog Night's version as far as the vocals but was faster and more hard rock. Quite
a good record actually! Wish I still had my 45 of it.

Yeah, I loved the 3 Dog Night version, got it on the flipside of "One" (their first single), and was mystified where it was from for a number of years. Finally got the Cilla Black version, VERY different than 3DN's, on one of the 'Pig' bootlegs. Saw 3DN in Memphis just after the release of the 2nd LP, so they did everything from the first 2 LPs. Their version of "It's For You" is what I'd call a great cover, unique to them; the only thing I could fault it for was it was too short, less than 2 mins I think. Of the three parts of their performance,
a capella - just piano with the voices - full rock band, in many ways I liked the middle part best; there was a poignancy to the
piano that struck me.

The new Paul ("Ever Present Past") is very good; I think the meaning is appropriate for him, for me, and I'm guessing a lot of other people too. What I was really meaning to write about is that great cover of "I'm Happy Just To Dance With You" by The Cyrkle. This is another example of my philosophy of good covers, go for something way off the beaten path of the original, here using a sitar on one of the earliest Beatle songs (at least a year or more before "Norwegian Wood") so it was an unusual performance (plus the odd rhythms). I have the same thoughts on going the over way also, when the Beatles were covering other people's stuff. They do decent covers of Chuck Berry / Carl Perkins / Little Richard etc, but nothing surprising; but when they take more chances, like especially "Twist & Shout" (replacing the sax on the Isley Brothers original with their guitars), it's spectacular. To a lesser extent, "Please Mr Postman" does that too I think. Thanks for finding and playing that Cyrkle version of it; as they say, YOU'RE THE MAN. See you sometime; keep the faith, brother. As Paul said, "It's Getting Better All The Time" (although sometimes it doesn't look it).

Dennis, thanks for sharing the Dibbs interview with us fans, it was both entertaining and revealing. Ringo was affable as usual and John exhibited his legendary moodiness. But the real gems of the interview were Paul and George. Paul, always the professional, exposed the candor and maturity he possessed at such a young age. George's comments were most insightful, even at such an early date he was discussing the possibility of leaving the performance side of the business in favor of producing other artists. I always thought that the turning point for George's desire to separate from the band came after his spiritual enlightenment, but the short term plans he had for his role in the Beatles is indisputable by Dec. 1963. Very interesting. Lastly, R.E.M. has done Lennon proud with their emotive #9 Dream, well done. Another very good show Dennis, thanks again.

Thanks for the fire drill Dennis, one never knows when a raging Beatles blaze will catch you unprepared.
I don't know what Paul's problem was with his song "That Means A Lot" which can be heard on this weeks playlist. Granted the song was not one of his best efforts but he certainly had worse on subsequent albums.
I read somewhere (or maybe it was Dennis' fine anecdotal commentary) that Paul disliked the song so much that during the printing of Anthology 2 he moved "I'm Down" to the #3 slot in place of "That Means A Lot", even though possibly several hundred thousand albums (the exact number escapes me) had to be recalled and replaced with the new running order approved by Paul. The cost of this recall was charged off to Apple Corps.
The song is very interesting, especially the twist on the harmonies. I quite enjoy this song from the Help period.
Dennis, thanks for the fun show this week. Cheers.

Just two little ears moving back and forth and then a paw batting the screen while John hauntingly sang "Across the Universe." How beautiful are the harmonies between Paul & George in P.S. I Love You??? According to my Beatle Bible, Paul was a mere 19 years old when he wrote this in Hamburg. George Margin didn't "like the material" and said that their "songwriting ability had no saleable future!" Words that would soon come back to haunt him. But apparently, it was their personalities that fascinated them in the control booth afterwards.
Thank you Dennis for playing the exceptional "You Know My Name, Look Up The Number." I remember when I first heard this how unique it was & could not believe it was the Beatles!! Since you don't hear it very often, thank you for playing it so that we can hear just how talented and playful the Fab Four really were and their peerless dispositions.
Also dont think enuf kudos are given to Ringo whose wonderful downbeats keep the songs moving and keep me swaying. Don't you guys think that he was about the first drummer in a band that we actually knew his NAME?? And then, he had a PERSONALITY too!! Great work Ringo!
And then George, the quiet Beatle. No one ever suggested cutting him out of the Beatles, did they. Why? Because of his utter genius guitar playing and his voice which blended right inbetween John & Paul's. Yep, the quiet one with the unrivaled soul. God bless ya George.
As they say, "The world is a sadder place with fewer Beatles in it."
Long Live the Beatles and thanks to Dennis Mitchell for keeping them alive for us.
Much luv & Good Health,

Nice 'George' show. He and Cavett play off of each other well. I've never heard the 'Inner Light riff' on the LOVE version of "Here Comes the Sun" back-to-back with "The Inner Light" itself. Sounds like George Martin slowed the tape down to match the key of "Here Comes The Sun" because the key is higher (and the rhythm faster) on "The Inner Light" (original version of the single). Fascinating. I remember reading a Lennon interview many years ago where he said that he (John) did that with the two halves of "Strawberry Fields" to make it in one key. Enjoyed the show, as always!

Kudos Dennis, Fabulous tribute to George.
As Ringo so poignantly observed of his soul brother George, "Every part of you was in your song" the birthday playlist faithfully reveals the essence of George. The song selection exposes George's unquenchable desire to seek clarity, simplicity, and the purpose of his existence. But, more importantly, his wonderfully wry and offbeat sense of humor is appreciated in todays tense environment.
Very few recording artists have the ability to speak to the human condition like George Harrison did in his lyrics and music. I will never forget the impact he has had in my personal quest for purpose and he will always be in my thoughts.
Peace and Love.
Cheer Down ;)

I just realized it, Dennis, but for Chinese New Year ("Year of the Pig") you could have used George's song "Piggies" and, for the Odd Track Out, you could have used that masterpiece by The Rutles, "Piggy In The Middle."

Loved hearing John's voice on Monday nite football with Howard Cosell. That is also the way I heard the news of how his life ended.
That, according to me, is "the day the music died."
Saw Elton John this past week in concert at Caesar's and he, like most old rockers, cannot hit the high notes any longer. But, Sir Paul still can. That's why I will try to never miss any of his shows that hit Vegas.
Ya gotta love him!!

Hello Everyone:::Once again, I loved the show this morning Dennis!!
My Saints lost last week, but at least a New Orleans' boy, Peyton Manning, will be representing the Crescent City in the SuperBowl along with his Dad, Archie Manning. Anyway, on the play list today was one of my favorites, Here, There & Everywhere by Sir Paul. Just love the line " Making each day of the year, changing my life with the wave of her hand." What a lovely image he paints in our mind. And also, it was one of John Lennon's favorites too. Heavy sigh!! Can't wait until this week ... have a ticket to go see Elton John & His Red Piano!! Program #810 was great. I've always liked Donovan, both the early folksie stuff on Hickory Records and especially the later Epic period when he experimented with raga, jazz, medieval, etc. styles. Wasn't there a party on the Dylan film "Don't Look Back" when all or some of the Beatles are there (but not credited)? I haven't seen it for ages, but I know Donovan is in the film, back in his Hickory days. Sometime it would be cool if you'll play "Heather" on BwtB; I've never heard it, or for that matter, even knew it existed. Bad "Sadie" joke for the day: the Yogi made a Boo Boo. Can you bear it?

Hey Dennis: Great Play List Today -- the day after my beloved New Orleans Saints' won their game!! Still can't believe it - have to pinch myself. Anyway, I went on-line to research Donovan and his biography is extremely interesting and actually found the Hurdy Gurdy Man link on YouTube and his singing it in Liverpool at a BeatlesFest.
I just Love It!!
Thanks for bringing it to our attention and keep up the good work.

X-mas 68 is my 2nd favorite (1966 is all time fav with the Banjo song!), mostly because the way it cycles around (Paul starts his song but gets interrupted, starts again, ad infinitum). When I first got a copy of X-mas 68 in 1973, I was surprised because I was familiar with the two John stories ("two Balloons" and "short haired butchers boy") from a "John & Yoko Calendar" that came with the "Live Peace in Toronto, 1969" LP.

Just flew back from a 13 hr. Beatles Marathon in Toronto, Canada, on 12/17. Extremely talented and devoted CAL Musicians played all 12 albums in order, PLUS I Want to Hold Your Hand AND She Loves You in GERMAN. Have never heard that B4 in my life!! Sat there from 12 noon til almost 2 a.m. in utter awe and extreme pleasure, and wanted to push the "repeat" button, but alas, there was none. Sir Craig Martin did a fab job arranging it all and in making me feel like Royalty since I came from afar. Check out www.classicalbumslive.com to see the results on the message board.

Paul (X-mas '64): "I don't know where we'd be without you..."
John: "in the army, perhaps"
(...How I Won The War?)
John's parody of talk-radio star Paul Harvey ("page two") is still funny. I've always liked Bonnie Prince Ringo's "Little Drummer Boy" - thanks playing it! In the late 70s, a Union Premium store (SW corner of Maryland and Flamingo) that had a copy of "Let It Be" on Beta, but I had a VHS machine so I spent several years in a fruitless search for a VHS copy. The memorable image of the film is John and Yoko waltzing, but I can't remember which song they were waltzing to. Do you know? The point on the X-mas '64 record when George talks about a "new film" (to be "Help!") it's fascinating to think that will eventually lead to his friendship with Ravi Shankar.

Excellent show this morning. May listen to it again this week, the Saints are playing this afternoon and that is a must see for me ... am from New Orleans. I have been looking all over, albeit not that deeply, for LET IT BE the VHS, but now that I have a home computer, will be more diligent. Have seen snipets and it looks utterly amazing. Went to Tower Records in Galleria which is closing and directly to the "B's," "Mc's," and "W's" for, what else, Beatles, McCartney and Wings, and, you guessed it, they were cleaned out EXCEPT for one copy of FLAMING PIE, so I got it 60% off $7 which was a bargain to me. Luv BWTB!! Later, ah

Programs 802 and 803 were better than even the usual. The "Savoy Truffle" cover by They Might Be Giants (on #803) was VERY cool (almost C&W!). I can't remember the artist, but around 1969-1971 there was a long (7-9 mins?) blues rock / R & B cover of the song that the Memphis underground rock station was always playing. Lot of guitar on it and it was getting more air-play than the original "Savoy Truffle" from the White Album. I've been searching the internet but I can't find anything remotely similar from that time period (maybe even 68-71). For some reason I'm thinking Albert King or Jeff Beck... too many years have passed! Anyway, keep up the good work!

Saw LOVE Sunday nite and would not call it a Vegas show, but more of a "magical experience." Sir George Martin & Son did an outstanding job of mixing the songs in ways no one could ever imagine. It made me feel as tho I was 14 yrs old again listening to them for the 1st time and getting goosebumps listening to the fresh voices and lyrics. Hearing George's solo voice was haunting! Blackbird was really fun .. since I knew the reason behind why Paulie really wrote it. Octopus' Garden was gorgeous! Have got to go see it 2 or 3 more times at least. That was my birthday present to myself and I did an exceptional job!! ah

To my understanding, the orchestration of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is one of only three pieces of audio that was added to Beatles' music on the "LOVE" album. It was scored by Sir George Martin in 1994 during the assembly of the Anthology.

I have a Mac so I'm unable to listen to your show. I was just wondering if you ever play any Beatles songs featuring Pete Best on drums? "Ain't She Sweet," and "My Bonnie," are excellent! Also, any thing by the Pete Best Combo is really good too. "I'm Gonna Knock On Your Door," "Don't Play With Me," and "Wait And See," are really good songs that I don't think a lot of Beatlefans have heard. Pete really shows off his drumming on some of these tracks.
The last three above mentioned songs are on the cd "The Pete Best Combo-Beyond The Beatles 1964-66" while "I'm Gonna Knock On Your Door," is available on a cd compilation entitled "The Beat Scene." Highly recommended stuff!

I have listened to Dennis' BWTB since the early 90s on Las Vegas's KKLZ and in recent years over the net. Before I landed in Vegas, I traveled the country on business for over a decade and heard many local Beatles' shows. Dennis is by far the best one. There is a great mix of official Beatles' tracks, rarities, and solo performances. You can really tell this guy loves his subject matter. The net makes it easy for me to get my Beatles fix either at work or at home. Good job on the program and the site looks good too.

It seems like an obvios question to ask...when it this show going to get licensed and put onto DVD for sell perhaps to support BWTB future endeavors (been listening for about a year now wonderng the obvious???) Certainly there is a demand for this in a DVD format packed with BWTB episodes since it's all audio. JMHO :-)
Great Job in any event to all, keep it up and coming. Jeez what a cool site..
